The World Health Organization(WHO) has defined Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as
the ability of a microorganism to stop an antimicrobial from working against it.
As a result, standard treatments become ineffective, infections persist and may
spread to others. It has further stated “AMR is of particular concern in developing
nations, including India, where the burden of infectious disease is high and healthcare
spending is low. The country has among the highest bacterial disease burden in the
world. Antibiotics, therefore, have a critical role in limiting morbidity and mortality
in the country.
